Priority Areas in Advancing Japan’s Development Assistance for Health

Even as sustainable health financing became a challenge for the global health community in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an independent commission on Japan’s Strategy on Development Assistance for Health (DAH) made a bold policy recommendation to double the amount of Japan’s DAH in the post-COVID-19 era.

In a paper published in The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific, Senior Fellow Shuhei Nomura, Senior Fellow Kazuki Shimizu, Senior Fellow Haruka Sakamoto, and other authors highlight priority areas in advancing DAH to ensure equitable and efficient use of limited resources in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, including universal health coverage and pandemic preparedness, in low- and middle-income countries.
